Thumb Sucking, Pacifiers, and Your Child’s Smile

Thumb sucking is normal in infants and toddlers—but when should parents be concerned?

  • Normal Development: Most children stop thumb sucking between ages 2–4.
  • Risks if it Continues: If the habit persists beyond age 4, it may cause:
    • Open bites
    • Overbites
    • Misaligned teeth
    • Speech difficulties
  • Research Evidence: A study in the American Journal of Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics (2016) confirmed prolonged thumb sucking increases risk of malocclusion.
  • Gentle Approaches: Positive reinforcement works better than punishment. Sometimes dentists can provide habit-breaking appliances if needed.

👉 About 15% of children still suck their thumbs after age 5 (AAPD).

No need to panic if your toddler sucks their thumb—but if it continues past preschool years, talk to your dentist.
